For many runners the term marathon is an ultimate in terms of distance and endurance. For non runners it is a concept that mast fail to wrap their minds around.
However for the ultra runner, the marathon is simply a stepping stone among others on the path to their goal.
This is often a challenge for a runner new to ultra distance running. The feeling of: 'how can this "ultimate distance" of the marathon, that I have been striving for so long towards, be "downgraded" to a training run'...
