The Heat Is ON!!


I know that it has been feeling super hot here in Southern Spain these past couple of days - increasing the need for maintaining hydration levels. Here is what the Daily Mail (UK) had to say.

Weather warning website MeteoAlarm has issued warnings of 'dangerous' conditions in 11 countries in Europe, including - as well as Italy, Spain and Croatia - parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Montenegro.

With peak temperatures topping 40 degrees Celsius in much of Italy, a total of 26 major towns and cities were on the health ministry's maximum heat alert.

Today, Seville in Spain and some areas of the Italian island of Sardinia can expect temperatures around 42-43C, while Novska in Croatia is predicted an afternoon high of 40C.

The Italian city of Florence saw temperatures were exceeding 40 degrees, however 'perceived temperature' - determined by temperature, humidity and wind and has been reported at more than 50 degrees.

In Romania, 'red alerts' have been issued after meteorologists have forecast 42C in western parts of the country. 
Earlier this week, Split airport in Croatia recorded 42.3C, not far from the country's highest ever temperature of 42.8C in 1981.

High humidity in the north and hot winds from Africa in the south are making the perceived temperatures seem even hotter on beaches across the Mediterranean.

The spike in temperature has also caused wildfires in Italy, Spain and Croatia this week.


In Italy's central region of Abruzzo, the fires has claimed the life of at least one person and forced the closure of a major highway.

The past years in Spain I have become used to seeing and hearing the term "sub-champion". So it was not a surprise at all to see that the Spanish President of the ITU sent a letter to the wrong Brownlee brother congratulating him on being the "Champion" at the WTS event in Leeds. She just failed to include the three letters "sub".... Oops...

Foam Rolling for soreness - Here's Why


Do you ever wake up feeling stiff and sore? Believe it or not, chronic back and leg tension is just as prevalent in the general population as it is in professional sports.

Sometimes our tired legs and achy back don’t want to cooperate with even the very first steps out of bed in the morning. There are certain areas of the body that experience recurring tension simply because we all sit, stand and move our bodies in a certain way.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get a daily massage do deal with the bodily discomfort caused by simply being human. Luckily there is foam rolling – also known as trigger point or myofascial release.

Long before foam rolling became an essential too of athletes looking for faster recovery after training, it has been a key modality in physio therapy to address muscle imbalances and posture misalignment.

Even if you are not an Olympian you can still benefit from the recovery tools they use. Maybe you are stiff and sore from a brutal day in the campo, or overdid it at Zumba class, or spent too much fiesta time in those killer heels. Either way, just a single session on a foam roller will help you “bounce back” to normal way quicker.

After running the London Marathon in April, Chrissie says that she started to Google ultra-marathons to see what they would be like during that post marathon haze of euphoria.

Chrissie admits that she has really enjoyed having a sporting goal again – even though she feels woefully under prepared for the double marathon distance of the Race to the Tower that she’ll line up for on 10 June.

In terms of race strategy Chrissie has no idea what to expect, so asked some experienced ultra-runners for some pointers. The advice that she received was identical to what I tell first time ultra-runners that I coach: This to start at a slower pace than you think is necessary, start you refueling much earlier than you have before and walk the hills. Most importantly though, enjoy it.

So Chrissie will follow her own quote: “Never, ever give up. And smile.”
